A touch of Edison’s history • Thomas Edison was born in Ohio on the 11th of February 1847, and grew up in Michigan. • He had six children and after the death of his first wife, he married another woman. • Before he became an investor and a businessman, he was a humble telegraph reporter. • He enjoyed reading and experimenting. • He died at age 84 in New Jersey, in 1931
“Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.”
Edison’s achievements • While working as a telegraph reporter, he found ways to improve the systems on hand at the time. • He made history for the first time when he invented the first ‘phonograph’, which could record sounds and repeat them. • Edison invented and developed the carbon microphone used in all telephones. • Edison is credited with designing and producing the first commercially available fluoroscope, a machine that uses X-rays to take radiographs. • Thomas Edison built a Kinetoscope, a motion picture camera, which was installed in penny arcades, where people could watch short, simple films.
Using his experiments and research, he created a light bulb that was worthy to be produced on a large scale. • Edison patented a system for electricity distribution which was essential to capitalize on the invention of the electric lamp.
Edison’s main focus • Considering his achievements, it is not hard to tell that Edison’s main thoughts were focused on using his knowledge to improve developments already on hand. Both the telegraph and the light bulb were invented by other critical and creative thinkers, but Edison modified and improvised on them and made them products that were more useful and valued at another period of time, in different cultural settings, to be more available to everybody.
What did Edison bring to the world? • Thomas Edison was a man of hope and perseverance. He says: “I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.” • Thanks to his inventions, he made communication between two points easier, and he set the mark for cinematic experiences. • His biggest inventions, electricity and the light bulb, are ones that billions around the globe can never thank him enough for.
