Opponent: Someone who runs against a person in an election Important Facts • Born in Hyde Park, New York in 1882 . • Roosevelt believed that the most important work he could do was public service or working for the good of others. • Franklin’s cousin Theodore Roosevelt became President of the United States when Franklin was in college. Franklin wanted to follow in the footsteps of his cousin. • When FDR was 39 he was diagnosed with polio. Polio is a disease that affects the ability to walk. • In 1929, Franklin became Governor of New York. During this time Americans were going through the Depression where many Americans lost their jobs. He worked hard to create jobs for the people of New York.

  2. Franklin ran for president in 1932. He promised to help people who were hurt by hard times. He said, “I pledge myself to a new deal for the American people.” • The New Deal program helped create jobs for the American people. Two programs he created were the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and the Works Progress Administration (WPA). • Roosevelt became the first president to be elected three times. • After Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941, the United States decided to enter World War II. • Americans helped with the War by growing their own food to send to soldiers. Children collected scrap metal to be turned into equipment for fighting the war. Women took over factory jobs that had been done by men. • Franklin died before the end of World War II while he was still president. • Many of Franklin’s programs he started while he was president are still present today.
