Project Title:Long-term Regional Cloud Vertical Distribution over the ARM SitesPrincipal Investigator:S.A. McFarlane (sally.mcfarlane@pnl.gov) • Project Status; Year 1: • Begin comparisons to TRMM/CloudSat with current cloud property and heating rate datasets • Gather long-term ARM datasets and identify issues. • Begin development of new retrieval. • Year 2: • Implement radar-lidar retrieval; run all TWP sites • Comparisons with other ground-based retrievals; including optimal-estimation methods • Use data to examine cloud vertical structure and MJO • Begin comparisons to TRMM and CloudSat • Year 3: • Complete comparisons to satellite products; cluster and regime analysis Science Issue: Improve understanding of vertical distribution of cloud properties and radiative heating profiles using high vertical resolution data. Approach: Develop new, more physically-based retrievals, perform comparisons to provide error bars on cloud properties. Process multiple years of data at ARM tropical and mid-latitude site. Compare to satellite profiles. Satellite-based data: Comparisons to TRMM, CloudSat, SARB products. Other data: ARM Study Particulars: ARM data at TWP (1999-2007) NEWS linkages: (pull, push, collaborate, external) Discussions with Kato, Weilicki to assess SARB surface/atmosphere products at ARM sites; to compare ARM cloud/heating profiles to CCCM products Collaborate with L’Ecuyer on comparing tropical radiative heating profiles from ARM/TRMM/CloudSat Collaboration with Alain Protat (BMRC, Australia) to compare cloud property retrievals.
