  5. The type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that needs insulin to treat. It is a health condition wherein the beta cells are being attacked and destroyed by the body itself. When the beta cells or pancreatic cells are destroyed, the pancreas cannot be able to function properly and it cannot also produce enough insulin. • People who are suffering from this type of diabetes is known as insulin dependent. Although the type 1 diabetes usually develops either during childhood or early adulthood, it can affect people of all ages.

In fact, the diabetes specialist center has revealed that 90 to 95 percent of diabetes sufferers in America are affected by type 2 diabetes. This type is characterized by insulin resistance or the body's inability to effectively use its own insulin. People who are more than 45 years old are likely to suffer from type 2 diabetes. Your risk for type 2 diabetes also increases if you are overweight or obese if you have previously suffered from gestational diabetes, and if you have a sedentary lifestyle or you are physically inactive. A family history of diabetes and ethnic background are also risk factors for this type of diabetes.
