  2. Week 5 Words Hiatus Larceny Scapegoat Virtuoso Zenith • Aversion • Behemoth • Contemporary • Fickle • Genre Study the definitions, synonyms, & antonyms, and know how to use them in a sentence.

  3. Aversion • (n) a strong dislike of something or someone • He has an aversion to green vegetables and refuses to eat them. • Synonyms: distaste, dislike, hatred • Antonym: liking • Also: averse

  4. Behemoth • (n) something that is very large • They found bones of the great behemoth. • Synonyms: beast, huge, mammoth • Antonym: runt • Also: n/a

  5. Contemporary • (adj) belonging to the present time • Because he is into modern things, his home is very contemporary. • Synonyms: current, fashionable, present-day • Antonyms: old, outdated • Also: contemporaries

  6. Fickle • (adj) describes someone who always changes their mind about people or things they like, so you can’t depend on them • My mother is very fickle. You can’t depend on her to stick to her guns. • Synonyms: indecisive, inconsistent, changeable • Antonyms: constant, consistent • Also: fickleness

  7. Genre • (n) a particular type of art, writing, books, music, etc. which has certain features • My favorite genre of books is science fiction. • Synonyms: type, sort, category • Antonyms: n/a • Also: genres

  8. Hiatus • (n) a break or interruption in an activity • I hate when I have to watch reruns when my favorite TV shows are on hiatus. • Synonyms: pause, lull, interval • Antonyms: continuation • Also: hiatal

  9. Larceny • (n) the act or crime of stealing • He went to jail for committing larceny. He stole more than four thousand dollars in goods. • Synonyms: robbery, theft • Antonyms: n/a • Also: larcenist, larcenous, larcener

  10. Scapegoat • (n) someone who is blamed for something bad that happens, even though it’s not their fault • My brother always makes me the scapegoat for all the things he does wrong. • Synonyms: victim, culprit, fall guy • Antonyms: n/a • Also: scapegoater, scapegoating

  11. Virtuoso • (n) someone who is a very skillful performer, especially in music • The virtuoso conducted the symphony. • Synonyms: artist, maestro, expert • Antonyms: inexperienced • Also: virtuosity

  12. Zenith • (n) the most successful point in the development of something; the highest point • When they reached the zenith of the mountain, they planted a flag to show they were there. • Synonyms: peak, summit, pinnacle • Antonyms: base, depths • Also: n/a
