  4. POETICS OF SPACE ABSTRACT To portray and express the different spaces within the emotional, psychological, sociological and cultural characteristics within To share the rich and diverse aspects of the architecture in Singapore and the unique co-existence of both its old and modern structures in a complex, multi-cultural and emerging society – evolved over the past 40 years since its independence – as part of the global community and within the South-East Asia region. As insisted pioneer architects, William S. W. Lim and Tay Kheng Soon, who were both the founders of SPUR, Singapore Planning and Urban Research Group in 1965, “We are in a creative phase. In order to produce creative images, we will much more than just technocrats and experts using slide rules and mathematical formulae or even computers. We need poets and visionaries. Poetic reality is all embracing.” Through an ingenious use of mediums such as photography and video and sound art installations, the exhibition is intended to provide historical and artistic expression of the urban planning and architectural development of Singapore with a heightened audio-visual sensorial tour of the lived, living and will live, spatial relations within the metropolitan landscapes and institutions. The interaction and intervention by the artists will attempt at invoking and evoking a sensibility beyond the physical environment.

  5. POETICS OF SPACE Video Installation A video installation produced by established Singapore artist, Choy Ka Fai, will present a historical evolution of Singapore’s urban development, with materials (archival images and videos) sourced from various industry partners, such as developers, architects, the National Archives of Singapore and other individuals, which constitutes important institutional memories. The presentation will involve both TV monitors as well as video projections onto large canvases. Technical brief: The small chamber within The Ruins will be studied with the artist for a video installation. This chamber can be dressed to block out almost all light for a more intimate video presentation. Heavy black clothed draping the walls and ceiling may be used to block out the light.

  6. POETICS OF SPACE Soundscape Installation A soundscape installation created by leading Singapore artist, Zulkifle Mahmod will provide a sense of our multi-ethnic and multi-religions community and the blend of traditional and contemporary culture and practices – a theatre of sounds of the daily life in Singapore. The installation will be composed of 30 to 40 small speakers suspended from the wooden beams in the “Ruins”, has a duration of approximately 45 minutes will looped continuously throughout the exhibition, inviting the hearing senses of the visitors, provoking a wholesome audio-visual experience. Technical brief: Approximately 50 small speakers will be suspended accros the room. The speakers are black in colour and will exist as a subtle visual installation within the space. The speakers can be housed in plastic balls which are then suspended from the beams. This will create a more interesting and visible installation.

  7. POETICS OF SPACE Photographic installation A specially curated photographic exhibition with some 50 fine art photographs by four of Singapore’s leading photographers, Darren Soh, Ken Liong, Teo Chai Guan and Yian Huang, will be installed on the walls. Bearing different sizes and in both colour and black & white, the photographs will focus on the landscape and architecture of the city – its buildings and the urban environment with an emphasis on the uniqueness of these structures and spaces. Technical brief: There will be approximately 40 to 50 photographs in varying sizes (approximately 10 from each photographer).  Some photographs will be in black and white, and some in colour. The photographs will be printed and mounted onto foam board which can be adhered to the walls. Some images may be repeated. For example, a particular photograph may make a stronger statement if printed small (say A4 size) and repeated to fill one entire wall. Maximum size should be no larger than 8 feet x 5 feet. As we have yet to confirm the final selection of photographs that the photographs could be grouped in spaces according to each of the artists or grouped according to themes or aesthetic qualities.

  8. POETICS OF SPACE Conclusion This exhibition will also be part of an international exchange programme from Singapore called Spotlight Singapore in Moscow, initiated and organized by The Arts House, a Singapore multi-disciplinary venue, in collaboration with the Embassy of Singapore in Moscow. Through a holistic programme that combines arts, business and humanitarian activities, Spotlight Singapore in Moscow aims towards creating understanding, dialogue and collaborations between the arts and business communities of Singapore with their counterparts in Moscow. This exhibition hopes to serve as a space for discourse and sharing between Singapore architects, urban designers and artists and their Russian counterpart and how the experience of each can inform one another.
