What are the Differences Between COB spot lights and SMD Lights? Have you wondered about the actual light source of an LED light? The 2 most popular types of LED lights are Surface Mount Diode (SMD) and Chip on Board Lights (COB). They both produce high quality light, have high life expectancy and are extremely efficient. WHAT IS CHIP ON BOARD(COB)? A COB spot light consists of a single LED chip, spread on the downlight, compared to an array of LEDs like an SMD. As the single cluster of LEDs are spread in one point, they require greater cooling, so a substantial heat sink, generally framed of aluminum, must be mounted to dissipate the heat. As further material is needed to manufacture a COB LED heat sink, this generally increases the cost slightly.
WHAT IS SURFACE MOUNT DIODE (SMD)? SMD are more effective than COB because the light source produces advanced lumens per watt, which means that they produce more light with a less wattage. They produce a wider ray of light which is spread over a lesser area. This means that less material is demanded for the heat sink, which in turn means that they're more provident. The manufacturing procedure to make them is more precious as the SMD diodes (LED chips) are machine printed on a PCB board. Most domestic downlights apply SMD LEDs. SMD downlights are covered with a frosted glass which hides the LED chip array, and spreads the light evenly. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF COB AND SMD? •Benefits of COB COB downlights give a better light source. It achieves a more focused light and with the use of mirrors, the light ray can be controlled. Chrome reflectors embracing the diode can be replaced and set at different angles to make the light ray narrower or wider. Due to the narrow ray and with the use of reflectors that are generally clear, COB lights generate crisper and cleaner as there's no frosting on the lenses. which cuts down the clarity of the LED light. Due to the clear lenses, more light can access further which means they perform well in rooms with high ceilings. The production efficiency of COB is higher than SMD. The LED chip is directly fixed on the pad of the light bead lamp position of the PCB board with conductive glue and separating glue, and also the conduction performance of the LED chip is soldered. After the test is completed, the epoxy chip is abstracted. •Benefits of SMD SMD downlights produce a wide spread of light. Its spates light everywhere which in turn means there's a higher light. SMD's production efficiency is low. Their wide ray angle means they're suitable for larger apartments like living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens and bathrooms. The LED chip is made of conductive bond and insulating glue fixed on the pad of the light bulb holder, also welded with the same conductivity as the COB package.
After the interpretation test, it's abstracted with epoxy resin and also the process of splitting, cutting and taping, and transporting to the screen factory. Based on such points, the difference between the practical application of SMD and COB in LED lights. Due to the SMD packaging building, SMD lighting cannot be applied to compact lighting systems. COB can live in high temperatures for a long time, and has good operation prospects for street lighting systems and high- pressure industrial lighting.
