Odia book satyanyayadarshana by maharshigoutam The Nyaya-sutras are attributed to Gautama, who was at the very least the primary author. According to Karl Potter, this is a very common Indian name, and the author is also known as Gotama, Dirghatapas, and Aksapada Gautama. Little is known about Gautama or the century in which he lived. Based on textual analysis, scholarly estimates range from the 6th century BCE, making him a contemporary of Gautama Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama) and Mahavira, to the 2nd century CE. Some scholars believe that the cryptic text Nyaya-sutras was expanded over time by multiple authors, with Gautama contributing the first layer around the mid-first millennium BCE.
