  5. Leadership “Everyone experiences it, or the lack of it, in their daily lives. Those called to lead can find doing so a daunting task. Those expected to follow can experience frustration when their leader is unable to lead and their organization seem to be going nowhere. …Countless discouraged leaders would probably quit their jobs today, but they need their income. …Discouraged Christian leaders carry the added, …burden that they are failing not only their people but their Lord” (Blackaby 2001: 3; Spiritual Leadership).

  12. WHAT IS RBM? • RBM is a management approach to improve service delivery at all levels • It focuses on results and ensures a sustained effort to continuously improve effectiveness, efficiency, transparency, and accountability

What is a result? • A result is a describable or measurablechange that has occurred in people’s lives arising from a cause and effect relationship / process • Result statement is always phrased in the past tense to demonstrate expected change. For instance, reduced, increased, improved and enhanced

Impacts • Widespread improvement in society normally realized in the intermediate to long-term. • Effectsof outputs to the lives of people Outcomes • Products and services produced directly from the activities Outputs • Tasks personnel undertake to transform inputs to outputs towards improved life Activities Need/situation Inputs • Financial, human, material resources and social capital • A circumstance that requires a solution in now or in the future RESULTS BASED LOGICAL FRAMEWORK Results Implementation 15

  19. 1 (a) Vision Kouzes and Posner (2002; Leadership Challenge ) state the following: • Inspire a shared Vision- Next share your vision in words that can be understood by your followers • Enable others to act –Give them tools and methods to solve the problem. • Model the way – when the process gets tough get your hands dirty. A boss tells others what to do, a leader shows that it can be done. • Encourage the heart – Share the challenges and glory with your followers’ hearts.

  27. Positive Thinking Mindset

  28. What is Positive Thinking? • Feeding your brain and mind with positive thoughts about your life and that of others – i.e. it is nutritious food for your soul • Do you know that on average, a person experiences about 50 000 to 60 000 thoughts every single day • Obviously positive thinking means that a great majority of these (50 000 to 60 000) should be positive thoughts

Benefits of positive thinking for RBL • A better rate of success in life (Against all Odds – on ENCA every Fri 8:45pm) • An increased life span • Lower rates of depression and distress • Greater resistance to the common cold • Better mental and physical well-being – also relating to academic excellence • Better coping skills/problem solving • Enhanced ability to form and maintain good relationships (social capital)

So, what is collective leadership? • It is leadership that embraces ideas from people; decisions are made and implement based on the majority input • Good collective leadership ensures that individuals are not featured but the group or team (analogy of a cake) • In the context of UCCZ, collective leadership is our congregationalism

Essential factors for sustaining Results-Based leadership • Uphold positive thinking and collective approach mindset • Focus on results and not on people • Conduct meetings regularly with the required quorum and minutes documented • Give everyone an opportunity to contributes ideas • Make decisions collectively using an agreed framework • Forgive and pray for each other to achieve results in one’s area of focus (James 5:16)

In conclusion… • Leadership means solutions not problems – i.e. services or results (RBM) • “…the son of Man [Jesus] did not come to be served, he came to serve and give his life to redeem many people” (Mark 10: 45 GNB) • Continuous development is a way of life for RB leaders • It takes the whole village to raise a child • RBL (service) = God’s purpose in us!
