Early Life • Rutherford Birchard Hayes was born on October 4, 1822, in Delaware, Ohio and died on January 17, 1893 in Fremont, Ohio • Father: Rutherford Hayes • Mother: Sophia Bichard Hayes • Married: Lucy Ware Webb (1831-1889) on December 30, 1852 • Children: Birchard Austin Hayes (1853-1926); James Webb Cook Hayes (1856-1934); Rutherford Platt Hayes (1858-1927); Joseph Thompson Hayes (1861-1863); George Crook Hayes (1864-1866); Fanny Hayes (1867-1950);Scott Russell Hayes (1871-1923); Manning Force Hayes (1873-1874)

  3. Education • Rutherford graduated from Kenyon college in 1842 and from Harvard Law school in 1845. • Before becoming President, Hayes was a lawyer. He also was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1865 to 1867. • He was the governor of Ohio in 1868-1872 and again in 1876-1877.

  4. President Accomplishments : When he was President, he oversaw the end of reconstruction and the United States’ entry into the Second Industrial Revolution. He was a reformer who began the efforts that led to civil service reform and attempted, unsuccessfully, to reconcile the divisions that led to the American Civil War 15 years before.

  5. After Life • Hayes decided not to seek re-election in 1880, keeping his pledge that he would not run for a second term. • Hayes became an advocate for educational charities, advocating federal education subsidies for all children. • Hayes was appointed to the Board of Trustees of The Ohio State University, the school he helped found during his time as governor of Ohio, in 1887. • Hayes gave a speech in 1889 encouraging black students to apply for scholarships from the Slater Fund, one of the charities with which he was affiliated.

  6. Notable Events • 1877- Federal troops withdrew from the South ending reconstruction. Striking railroad workers and federal troops clashed. • 1878- Bland-Allison Silver Purchase Act passed despite Hayes veto.

  7. Points Of Interest • Hayes' father died a few months before he was born. • Of the five presidents who served in the Civil War, Hayes was the only one to be wounded. • Arriving in San Francisco on September 8, 1880, Hayes became the first president to visit the West Coast while in office. • Hayes was the first president to graduate from law school. • Mrs. Hayes was known as "Lemonade Lucy" because she refused to serve alcohol in the White House. • Lucy Hayes was the first Lady to have graduated from college. • He won the presidency by only one electorial vote. • He signed the act that permitted women to plead before the Supreme Court. • The first White House telephone was installed, by Alexander Graham Bell himself, during the Hayes administration. • The first Easter egg roll on the White House lawn was conducted by Hayes and his wife.
