  1. NAME 9-24-09 HOUR NOTES: Unit 1-Organic Molecules

  2. (1) What does Organic mean? • Organic Food = Fruits & Vegetables which were grown and processed with less than 5% use of pesticides/chemicals • Organic Molecule = Contains Carbon • This is what we are talking about! • ALL Living Things are made of Carbon-Molecules!

  3. (2) Carbon • Carbon has 4 Valence Electrons • Carbon wants 8 total Valence Electrons • Carbon can share 4 more! • 4 more valence electrons • 4 available bonds • Lots of Bond Openings = Variety of Arrangements & Molecules

  4. (3) Common Biological Elements • Carbon (C) • Hydrogen (H) • Oxygen (O) • Nitrogen (N) • Phosphorus (P) • Sulfur (S) • CHONPS!

  5. (4) Types of Organic Molecules • Organic Molecule = Biomolecule • TYPES: • Carbohydrate • Lipid • Protein • Nucleic Acid

  6. (5) Water • NOT an Organic Molecule…. BUT…. • Cells ~ 70% Water! (Necessary for Life) • Unique Properties: • High Heat Capacity • Polar • Neutral Solution for Nutrients • Reacts to Form or Break Down Molecules

  7. TAKE OUT BIOMOLECULE WKST/TABLE!
