  1. This term in room 2 we have been learning about planet earth and beyond . We have been looking at the stars, planets and the solar system. There are going to be Heaps of interesting facts and inform- Mation about what I am learning in Class! By Kaiah Room 2

Facts • A star is a massive ball of plasma (Hot ionized gas) • Stars are important to civilizations around the whole world. • The sun is also a star. • A star begins as a collapsing cloud of material composed primarily of hydrogen and other gases. • Stars live for different lengths of time, depending on there size. • A star like our Sun can live for nearly 10 billion years. • How hot a star can be depends on it’s colour. For example; • A red star can be 2,600-3,850 degrees C. • By Kaiah • Room 2

  3. The Solar System is everything that centres around the sun. • The solar system has 8 planets and they are: Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. • Pluto used to be planet but scientists say that it is a dwarf planet. • By Kaiah • Room 2

Matariki is the Maori celebration. • Matariki means: eye of a chief or small eyes. • It is a constellation that is important for navigation and timing the seasons. • Matariki was a sign for the Maori people to prepare the crops for the coming seasons. • Matariki has always been a important time on the Maori calendar. • It is also a indicator for the upcoming seasons. • Heralded by the rising of the star constellation known as Matariki. • Matariki was a time to turn to the future . • Matariki starts rising early June and is here for the remainder of the year. • Matariki got me out of bed on Saturday at 4:00 in the morning. • By Kaiah • Room 2

  6. On Saturday at 4am in the morning I went with my dad to the Auckland StarDome at One Tree Hill to see Matariki. My dad and I were the first people there so the workers outside told us to go and look in the information room. We walked into the information room and there was a lot of information about planets, the moon, the sun and last but not least how stars were formed. We sat in the planetarium in the dark and within minutes we were in space. We were looking up at the ceiling and they showed us were Matariki was in the sky during the day. We also venture through the solar system and all around the planets. It was so cool! I’m so glad I woke up early and went and saw Matariki.
