  1. Jean Ballet, Isabelle Grenier CEA Saclay DSM/IRFU/SAp GLAST: schedule and science program on behalf of the LAT collaboration

  2. GLASTObservatory • Large Area Telescope (LAT) • 20 MeV – 300 GeV • Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) • 8 keV – 30 MeV • launch June 2008 • lifetime: 5 + 5 years http://glast.gsfc.nasa.gov/public/resources/images/

  3. Reconstruction LAT telescope Simulation of high-energy gamma Validation by beam test at CERN in 2006 on 2 towers Ground event

  4. LAT performance • 20 MeV to 300 GeV, sensitivity > 25 x EGRET • 3.2° to 9’ resolution > GeV, 5 ≤ dE/E ≤ 10 % • 2.5 sr, 3/4 sky per orbit, slewing => all sky every 3 h LAT 1 year EGRET

  6. FSRQ radio γ-ray blazars • EGRET • 46 FSRQ + 14 Bl Lac • (to be revised) • to z = 4.5 and 5.5 • TeV • 20 sources, z < 0.2 • to Eγ > 30 TeV • + M87 radiogalaxy FSRQ EGRET Sowards-Emmerd et al. ’04 Dermer ‘07

  7. γ-ray blazars • LAT • ~ 2000 blazar detections • deep all-sky survey • z ≤ 5 because of Doppler amplification Dermer ’07

  8. synchrotron & IC accretion rate ↓ ? Donato ’01

  9. variability: multi-λ campaigns

  10. γ-ray pulsars: from 6 to tens • ~ 220 radio and X-ray pulsars monitored for ephemerides • Parkes, Jodrell, Greenbank, Nancay, RXTE, XMM ... coord: David Smith • Look for new Gemingas • Search for periodicities in time differences. Atwood et al ‘06 • Extend the relations between: • γ-ray luminosity and spindown power • spectral hardening and age • Look for Pulsar Wind Nebulae: • more difficult than at TeV

  14. GLAST launch and early operations Launch date now early June, after shuttle launch on May 31 • Early operations: • Two weeks turn-on and checkout • Two weeks calibration runs • « First light » (short survey mode) after one month (early July) • Pointed and survey mode tuning for one month • Start year 1 science operations after two months (survey mode with occasional repoints for GRBs or ToOs)

  15. GLAST LAT data • to be delivered readily: • γ-ray bursts, bright transients • lightcurves of useful variable sources • after 6 months: • simple conservative 3-months source list for supporting 2nd AO • analysis software suite • after 1 year: • calibrated data, skymaps • interstellar model • full source catalogue (1+2+5 yr)

  16. Stay tuned in early June !
