  1. DEVELOPMENT OF A SPEECH TRANSCRIPTION TOOL FOR SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPISTS Progress Presentation Presented by: Frank O’Connor 15/01/07

  2. Brief Overview: • The Role of Speech and Language Therapists • VeryYoungChildren->Adults of AllAges • Difficulty in Communicating or Swallowing • Diagnosis of Underlying Physiological, Physical or EmotionalDysfunction • Training in Breathing, Use of Voice, Development of New Speaking Habits

  3. Project Objectives: • Computer-Based Tool for Automatic Analysis of Recordings • Reduce Time to Perform Manual Process • Permit Standardisation • Allow Reproducibility • Present User with Clear and Usable Interface • Allow for Easy Archiving and Retrieval

  4. Implementation of Basic Speech Recognition System Progress to Date:

  5. Front – End Processing • Processing using Matlab • Calculation of Mel Cepstral Frequency Coefficients • http://www.speech-recognition.de/matlab-examples.html • Header Added to Output File • No. of Samples (4-byte int) • Sample Period (4-byte int) • Sample Size (2-byte int) • Parameter Kind (2-byte int) Basic Recognition System:

  6. HMMs and Likelihood Computation • HMMs Implemented Using HTK Toolkit • Isolated Word Recognition • Word Level System • Isolated Word Recognition System • “Zero” -> “Nine” • Labelled Manually • Tested with Added White Noise Basic Recognition System:

  7. Progress to Date: • Basic User Interface • Linked to Matlab Code via COM Object/dll • Selectable Input Device • Output Currently Read and Displayed From “recout.mlf” • Data Management Implemented via Tree-Structure and ADO Database • Allows Recording of “Live Speech”

  8. Basic User Interface Progress to Date:

  9. Next Stage : • Remaining Work • Refine System Using TIMIT Database • Implement Using Clinical Data • Update User Interface to Reflect Changes • Implement Trend Analysis Function • Update Data Management System • Integrate Web-Server Functionality

  10. Possible Issues • Limited Availability of Clinical Training Data? • Format of Recorded Sessions Unknown? • Feasibility of Removing Therapist’s Speech? • Is Limited Library Sufficient? • Characteristics of Internet Connection for Remote Access? Problems Encountered:

  11. Stage 1: • Implementation of System Based on TIMIT Database – Jan 22th Updated Timeline: • Stage 2: • Update User Interface and Data Management Functionality – Feb 5th • Stage 3: • Implementation of System Based on Clinical Data – Feb 26th • Stage 4: • Web Server Functionality – Mar 2th
