  3. Definition of Pain • Pain is an unpleasant physical feeling often caused by intense or damaging stimuli. • Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage. • Pain motivates the individual to withdraw from damaging situations, to protect a damaged body part while it heals, and to avoid similar experiences in the future. The International Association for the Study for Pain YL Momentum Team™

  4. Types of Pain • Acute pain often results from tissue damage, such as a skin burn or broken bone. Acute pain can also be associated with headaches or muscle cramps. This type of pain usually goes away as the injury heals or the cause of the pain (stimulus) is removed. • Chronic pain refers to pain that persists after an injury heals, cancer pain, pain related to a persistent or degenerative disease, and long-term pain from an unidentifiable cause. • It is estimated that one in three people in the United States will experience chronic pain at some point in their lives. Of these people, approximately 50 million are either partially or completely disabledSource: WebMD YL Momentum Team™

  5. Statistics • Pain is one of the most common reasons for patients to seek medical attention and one of the most prevalent medical complaints in the US. • 9 out of 10 Americans aged 18 or older suffer pain at least once a month, and 42% experience it every day. ----World Health Organization • Physicians and other practitioners need education to assist in developing the skills needed to evaluate and manage patients with pain. YL Momentum Team™

  6. 10 Pain Killer Facts You May Not Know * Doctors Do Not Know About Natural Alternatives ---Dr.Shane Ellison: www.thepeopleschemist.com • Child Overdose - Too Common • Adult Overdose - Easier Than You Expect • Adulterated Painkillers - Cancer Causing Compounds • Liver & Kidney Damage - Is Common • Aspirin - Risks Higher Than Benefits • Motrin - Side effects • Tylenol - Side Effects YL Momentum Team™

  7. Chronic Pain in US • 116 million adults have chronic pain conditions • Pain costs society $560-$636 billion /year ($2000/per person) • Severe headache pain 16% • Low back pain 28% • Neck pain 15% • Knee pain 20% • Shoulder pain 9% • Hip 7% ---Institute of Medicine of the National Academies Report, Relieving Pain in America, 2011 YL Momentum Team™

  8. Physiology of Pain • Fundamentally, pain is real and it is sore ! • Throughout the nervous system, we can identify two forms of pain transmission. • In the periphery we have fast pricking pain transmitted by myelinated A-delta fibres, and 'slow' burning pain mediated by the primitive C fibres. • In the spinal cord, the affective component of pain is transferred by spinoreticular fibres, and fibres to the medial thalamus, and thence to those parts of the cortex where 'sore' pain is perceived. • The 'neospinothalamic tract' transmits discriminative components of pain to the SI cortex via the lateral thalamus. ----AMA YL Momentum Team™

  9. Cerebral Cortex • Regions of the brain associated with pain --Wikipedia Commons:2007,Borsoak YL Momentum Team™

  10. Is There a Cortical Pain Center ? • Unfortunately there is no discrete centre where pain is recognized. • Pain is so important to survival that almost the whole brain is involved. • Pain involves cognition, emotion, and behavior. • PET scan data obtained during painful stimulation indicates activity in the following cortical areas:---Brodmann's tissue classification • 1.sensory and motor cortex areas • 2.premotor cortex • 3.other parts of the parietal cortex • 4.other parts of the frontal cortex • 5.cingulate cortex • 6.insula • 7.occipcortex • Pain also projects to the following subcorticalstructures: thalamus, hypothalamus, amygdala, periaqueductal grey matter, hippocampus, and cerebellum (Wall,1996). YL Momentum Team™

  11. Psychology of Pain • Individuals with more social supportexperience less cancer pain, take less pain medication, report less labor pain and are less likely to use epidural anesthesia during childbirth or suffer from chest pain after coronary artery bypass surgery.---Wikipedia • Suggestion can significantly affect pain intensity. About 35% of people report marked relief after receiving a salineinjection they believe to have been morphine.---ISBN • This ”placebo" effect is more pronounced in people who are prone to anxiety, so anxiety reduction may account for some of the effect, but it does not account for all of the effect. YL Momentum Team™

  12. Psychology of Pain, continued • Placebos are more effective in intense pain than mild pain; and they produce progressively weaker effects with repeated administration. • It is possible for many chronic pain sufferers to become so absorbed in an activity or entertainment that the pain is no longer felt, or is greatly diminished. -----Wikipedia---ISBN YL Momentum Team™

  13. Authenticating Pain • “Pain is whatever the experiencing person says it is and it exists whenever he or she says it does” • Quality of pain is assessed by using a pain scale and an assessment questionnaire. ---McGill Pain Index and Questionnaire YL Momentum Team™

  14. Pain Scale • Scoring Tool 0-10, highest number  most intense pain YL Momentum Team™

  21. Healthy Spine • Spine is a group of bones in a line up the center of your back. • The individual bones are called vertebrae. • There are 33 bones in all : • 24 vertebrae • the sacrum (which is actually 5 vertebrae fused together) • tailbone, or coccyx (4 vertebrae fused together). • The individual vertebrae are stacked on top of each other from about the level of your belly button up to your head.

 • When healthy, the bones of the spine are strong and dense. All bones get their strength primarily from two important minerals - calcium and phosphate. • When there is a shortage or loss of these minerals because of an inactive lifestyle or disease, the bones lose their structure and strength. • Unless they are weakened in this way or are damaged in an accident or fall, bones do not typically break or wear out. ----WebMD YL Momentum Team™
