    3. Introduction Since the year 2000, opportunities in online education have steadily increased Expenditures greater than $9 billion in 2003 Researchers expect a 30% per year increase until 2008 Bottom line: DISTANCE EDUCATION IS BIG BUSINESS!

    4. Reasons for Increased Popularity For a university: reach a large number of students in remote locations Dont have to invest in structural facilities For a student: Juggle many responsibilities while pursuing an education Military, family, careers, etc.

    5. Challenges for Distance Learning Students need to be focused, mature, know how to work independently, possess a high degree of self-discipline Students may feel isolated from the campus, other students, and faculty

    6. Course Design Is Important Plenty of opportunities to interact with students and faculty Virtual caf or student lounge Well-organized course content and structure Highly accessible faculty member

    7. Current Practices Blackboard and WebCT popular platforms Features include: Ability to upload/download documents Discussion Board Live chat rooms On-line assessments Other options

    8. My Techniques Could be used in a wide variety of online courses Current example shows ideas as employed in PSY 4421 Physiological Psychology at Troy University I designed these techniques to minimize the feelings of separation from the campus and to strengthen the learning process

    9. Features of My Online Course Created an interactive website that serves as the major focal point of the Blackboard Shell
