    2. Violations of Neutrality Great Britain and France did not want the US helping the other side. British ships search US ships and often took sailors. Impressment- practice of forcing people to serve in the army or navy.

    3. Embargo Act Embargo- banning of trade 1807 Congress passed the Embargo Act banning trade with foreign nations. Jefferson hoped to hurt France and Britain but did more harm to the US.

    4. Non-Intercourse Act 1809- Congress replaced the Embargo Act with the Non-Intercourse Act. Banned trade with Britain and France. The US would resume trade with the 1st side that stopped violating US neutrality.

    5. Conflict in the West Thousands of settlers continued to move into the Northwest Territory. Britain began to arm Native Americans

    6. Tecumseh Shawnee Chief who wanted to unite Native Americans against settlers.

    7. William Henry Harrison Governor of the Indiana Territory in charge of dealing with Native Americans.

    8. 1810- Tecumseh and Harrison met. Harrison- Native Americans should follow treaty of Greenville Tecumseh- Native Americans had the land first and no 1 chief could sell the land belonging to all.

    9. November 7, 1811 Battle of Tippecanoe Harrison attacked while Tecumseh was getting support from the Creek. US defeated Native Americans and Tecumseh fled to Canada.

    10. War Hawks Young members of Congress who called for war with Britain because of their support to Tecumseh.

    11. War Hawks Most from the South Henry Clay KY John C. Calhoun SC Felix Grundy TN Wanted to stop British support of Native Americans and invade Canada for more land.

    12. ` James Madison was elected President in 1808. 1812- went to Congress to decide if want to go to war. For the first time the United States Congress declared war.
