  2. Somali Reconciliation & Restoration Council (SRRC) • A government comprised of the 5 main warlord groups in Somalia • Hussein Aidid, the son of Mohammed Aidid, is one of the main members

  3. Transitional National Gov’t • Inability to create a central gov’t so regional gov’t formed • Government that is said to be “in control” in Somalia • Also comprised of clans/tribes

  4. Transitional National Gov’t • Not very successful in ruling • There has been civil war in Somalia and territory that should be under their control is not • None of the regional gov’ts recognized it as official

  5. Transitional National Gov’t (TNG) • Strongly opposed by Hussein Aidid and other members of the Somali Reconciliation and Restoration Council (SRRC) • TNG only lasted until Aug. 2003

  6. Transitional National Assembly • In Aug. 2004 a 275-member transitional parliament was inaugurated for a five-year term • Selected President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed • Ruled out of Kenya – Somalia too violent

  7. Transitional National Assembly 2006 – worst outbreak of violence in 10 yrs Islamist militias – Somali Islamist Court Council (SICC) battled warlords Ethiopia sent troops to stabilize

  8. Transitional National Assembly Al-Shabab, militant wing of SICC, allied itself w/al-Qaeda Waged war against TNA Controls almost all of southern Somalia Ethiopia has withdrawn troops

  9. Al-Shabab Formally declared allegiance with al-Qaeda in Feb. 2010 Bombed restaurant in Uganda in July 2010 – people watching the World Cup Message to countries who have sent troops to support TNA

  10. SOMALI PIRATES – way to earn a living for many fishermen or ex-militiamen of warlords
