Vision Statement-Our Future • AAYLC Vision: “Youth Building Respect and Responsibility for Future Rewards” • Our conference strives to provide our youth with the tools and skills necessary to become contributing members of our community and society • Mission Statement: “educate and empower our youth to develop individual and community responsibility for self and others by providing leadership, social and cultural awareness”

Goals • Increase our key sponsor’s participation in the conference  • Increase fundraising each year by 10 % • Increase the Finance Committee membership • Provide age/grade appropriate informational materials for student's book bags • Increase the use of our conference website by the committees and local community • Staff training

Goals • Design the conference webpage as a year-around tool.  Investigate the use of Facebook and other social sites for the conference • Increase the use of local media coverage of the conference • Obtain participation/attendance from all Colorado Springs school districts; focusing on one district at a time • Establish a Volunteer Orientation Class

Action Plan 2014 Taking lessons learned from past conferences and listening to our community inputs, we see the following six areas as focus point for 2014 conference: • Self-Management Skills • Communication & Critical-Creative Thinking • Media & Technology • Interpersonal, Conflict Management/Democratic • Organizational & Small Group Skills • Citizenship or Democratic Discussion & Problem-solving and Reasoned Action Skills

Self-Management Skills • Inventory of current life skills or the knowledge and skills needed by leaders • Analyze personal learning style or multiple intelligences • Identify areas for further personal learning and development • Resource and money management • Set new personal learning goals, such as improvement of certain leadership skills

Communication Skills • Communication and critical creative thinking • Critical Listening Skills: active listening to others • Observation Skills: use of media and senses to perceive and interpret outcome • Critical Writing: How to use effective strategies to achieve different purposes in writing • Critical Speaking: How to effectively communicate orally ideas, opinions, and feelings • Critical Reading: Use effective strategies to achieve different purposes in reading

Media and Technology How to use media and technology critically and creatively for different purposes • Use a variety of technologies, methods and tools for problems solving and present information • Select and use appropriate media to capture audience attention or convey • Inventory media skills or the knowledge leaders need • Set new personal learning goals, such as improvement of certain leadership skills

Interpersonal, Conflict Management • Learn and use interpersonal skills effectively • How to manage conflict in family, groups, school, community • Use the democratic organizational and small group skills • Practice self-regulation – monitor one’s own behavior, assess situations, take others’ perspectives into account, act on judgments about which behaviors are appropriate in the situation • Demonstrate strategies for relieving stress and pressure in conflict situations • Practice strategies to manage unhealthy or dangerous situations • Lead a discussion of controversial issues with follow-up reflection and discussion • Negotiate agreements • Mediate disputes • Serve as a class mediator. Engage in peer mediation

Civic Responsibility, Democratic Organizations • Engage in a public policy issue • How does the city governance work • Discuss a controversial issue from different viewpoints before making a decision • Make reasoned judgments about what to do in a particular situation • How to set up a school forum on a significant issue • Teamanship Skills such as facilitating a meeting: set an agenda, establish ground rules, assign work roles, delegate work, check progress toward goals, acknowledge others’ contributions, contribute ideas • Engage in a debate • Serve as a small group process observer • Lead a small democratic discussion group, such as a study circle • Lead a collaborative/cooperative workgroup • Demonstrate team building strategies, activities, and exercises • Provide oral/written feedback on group process

  14. So what can we do • Review these ideas with your committee • Draft up ideas as to how you can assist in obtaining these goals and objectives • Present your overall plan and ideas for the conference at the next meeting
