  2. INTRODUCTION Numerous studies conducted in indoor artificial lighting show an impact on : • light estimation • cognitive performance • mood • behavior But we know very little about the effects of outdoor night lighting. This is what we proposed to explore

  3. MAIN PURPOSE Our main purpose was to examine, in a field exploratory study : • how people evaluate the outdoor night lighting • to find out people’s expectations of the functions of urban lighting • to understand what criteria they use to evaluate « good lighting » • to know what improvements they suggest

  4. METHODOLOGY SUBJECTS 140 subjects representative of the eighteenth district of Paris in regards to age, gender, and socio-economic background

  5. METHODOLOGY SUBJECTIVE INDICATORS A standardized questionnaire was established from a set of semi-directive interviews (20). The major topics investigated : • Satisfaction about neighbourhood • The various functions of urban lighting • Evaluation of the urban lighting of the area • Proposals for improvement

IMPACT OF DIFFERENT FACTORSAge Effects of age : • on the functions of lighting (create activity : ² = 13,73 , p< .01) • on expectations of a good lighting ( colour) on the proposal to increase lighting (for older persons : ² = 14,7 , p< .001) Gender Effects of gender : • on preference for colour (men prefer blue : ² = 4,03 , p< .05) • on the evaluation of various sources of lighting • on the functions of lighting

  13. IMPACT OF DIFFERENT FACTORSTime spent in the area Effects of time spent in the area : • on the effects of various sources of light • on the evaluation of the impact of a good lighting • on proposals for improvement

  14. MAINS PROPOSALS • To take in account the quality of urban landscape • To vary the sources • To take in account the density • To increase lighting

  15. CONCLUSION • Security is not the first expectation of the city dwellers in regards to lighting. • Their main interest is to be able to walk safely, followed by an expressed concern for the appreciation of the city itself. • A good lighting should not to be too strong yet adapted to the type of street, spaces and density. • Age, sex, and the lengh of time living in the area mediate the expectations and evaluations toward urban night lighting.
