  1. Math: Decimals What are Decimals?

  2. What are decimals? • Take out your Math Journals. • What down the heading: Decimals – What are Decimals? • We are about to do some learning! Fun!

  3. What are decimals? • Decimals are very similar to fractions. • Decimals are a way to RECORDING NUMBERS THAT ARE BIGGER THAN 0 BUT SMALLER THAN 1. • For example, draw ½ (fraction of a whole) of a car. [30 seconds]

  4. What are decimals? • ½ of a car is more than 0 cars. • But it is less than 1 whole car. • It is more than 0 but less than 1.

  5. What are decimals? • Now draw ¼ of a pizza. [30 seconds] • You have some pizza…so that’s more than 0. • But you don’t have an entire pizza…so that’s less than 1. • 30 Second Assessment: Do we understand how we can have more than 0 but less than 1?

  6. What are decimals? • We can use decimals just like we can use fractions of a whole (1/2 of a car; ¼ of pizza) to show more than 0, less than 1. • For example, 0.5 = ½. It is HALF OF 1. • Half of one is more than nothing (0) but less than one whole (1). • 0.5 is the decimal way of saying ½.

  7. What are decimals? 1 = 0.5 =

  8. What are decimals? • You drew ¼ of a pizza earlier. Since ¼ is also more than 0, less than 1 we can use DECIMALS to represent that same information. • ¼ = 0.25! • 0.25 is the decimal way of saying “1/4.”

  9. What are decimals? • 0.5 = • 0.25 = Notice how 0.25 (1/4) is Smaller than 0.5 (1/2). Also notice how 0.5 (1/2) is smaller than 1.

  10. What are decimals? • Just like regular numbers DECIMALS use PLACE VALUE. • Check out this PLACE VALUE CHART for DECIMALS:

  11. What are decimals? • So now it’s time to answer our big question for the day… • Please answer using 2-4 complete sentences… WHAT ARE DECIMALS?
