Understanding Personification: Breathing Life into Inanimate Objects

Personification is a literary device that attributes human characteristics to non-human entities, infusing depth and emotion into descriptions. By associating human traits with objects, writers can evoke vivid imagery and resonate with readers on a deeper level. Examples include a singing radio or a flower that cries in a storm. This technique allows for creative expression, making the ordinary extraordinary as non-human objects engage in human-like actions and emotions, such as the wind dancing with trees or a bag frowning under weight.

  1. Personification By: Emily Choi, Chanel Kim, Justin Yoon

  2. Definition Association of a non-human object with a human characteristic. It is a way of giving depth to a description by brining in all the lyrical baggage of a term we normally associate with a person. It is a non-human object that talks like a human and acts like a human.

  3. Example The radio was singing songs. The moon ate the sun, and it started to shine. The flower started to cry when it saw a hurricane coming. The wind and the tree dancing together. The bag frowned when a heavy book was coming in.
