  1. World Database on Protected Areas:Data StandardsArianna GranzieraWDPA Content OfficerProtected Areas Programme

  2. Outline: • Data Structure • Cross checking • Data Quality

  3. WDPA Standards for Global Interoperability • All protected areas must fit the IUCN definition of protected area • The data must be spatial • The ‘minimum’ attributes for each protected area must be included • Source information must be provided for both spatial and attribute data

  4. 1. IUCN definition • “A clearly defined geographical space, recognized, dedicated and managed, through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values.”—Dudley, N. (Ed.) 2008

  5. 2. Spatial Information • Providing geographic location: • Polygons and Points

  6. 3. Attribute data • From 44 to 20! • Language Standards • 8 Minimum: basic information – compulsory • [ + 3 assigned by UNEP-WCMC] • 5 Core: priority information for analysis and reporting • 4 Enhanced: supplementary information Αιγαίου 欢迎来到 محمية العقبة البحرية • Clear Requirements:

  7. CROSS CHECKING

  8. 4. Sourcing • Based ISO Metadata Standards • Data Set Title (M) • Abstract (M) • Responsible Party (M) • Responsible Party • Contact E-mail (M) • Date (M) • Dataset Language (M) • Dataset Character Set (M) • Name, Projection, Ellipsoid, Datum (M) • Source Scale Denominator (O) • Lineage Process Step Description (O) • Source Citation (O)

  9. WDPA Quality • Statistically calculated through scoring system based on: • presence of polygons versus points • completeness of attribute information • currency of dataset

  10. Then translated into quality categories: poor, deficient, good, very good

  11. Thank You! • Further information: • UNEP-WCMC (2010). Data Standards for the World Database on Protected Areas. Arianna.Granziera@unep-wcmc.org
