  1. Five wishes that could impact our activity in the next decade Steven Newhouse EGI Wishlst for the next decade

  2. Policy Wishes • A useful federated identity system • Data protection legislation that clearly permits non-trivial attributes to be released • Outcome: More user oriented AAA systems • Clarity on the responsibility of cross-border data hosting • This is becoming a barrier to further EU cloud activity and without rapid policy action will become a serious blocker • Outcome: Eliminate the FUD in this area EGI Wishlst for the next decade

  3. Funding Wish • Sustainability is becoming a big distraction within the EU (and elsewhere?) • Do they want to put users in the driving seat for buying services? Then they need to put mechanisms in place to achieve this. • Do they just want to shift costs to somewhere else? Then they need to recognise they are jepodising long-term planning and development • Outcome: Understand how much this needs to be embedded into community activity or is this just a passing phase from funders EGI Wishlst for the next decade

  4. Technology Wish • We need to have a globalplatform so that an ecosystem of providers can innovate • GSM allows any compatible phone to plugin • Strong standards based ecosystem • Networks TCP/IP etc. allows global connectivity • Strong standards based ecosystem • Microsoft/Apple desktop/app store model • Proprietary interfaces enable ecosystem • Outcome: If as a community we can agree on some restrictions we will be able to manage the resources we have (people & money) more effectively by having real compatibility & reuse EGI Wishlst for the next decade

  5. Software Wish • Acontinuing source of open-source software requires continued investment • Critical infrastructure components (by definition not research software) have to fight through the peer-review process or have maintenance activity disguised as research • This is not sustainable. Either need central funding (e.g. as a facility) or users need to be given funds to buy access to software • Outcome: Long-term clarity (5-10 yrs) as to how the software that is used (and this will change over time) will be maintained for the community that uses it EGI Wishlst for the next decade
