  2. Florence & Family • Florence was born in Florence, Italy on 12th May 1820 • Her parents were called William and Fanny Nightingale. Her sister was called Frances. • Florence’s father was a banker. The family were very rich. • Florence was very clever and liked History and Maths • At the age of 16, Florence believed that God wanted her to do important work.

  3. Why did Florence want to be a nurse? • Florence was interested in helping others. When she young she used to care for sick pets. • She wanted to become a nurse but at first her father would not allow it. Eventually he gave in and in 1851 Florence went to Germany to train as a nurse. • She spent many years being a nurse in Europe, then in 1853 came to London.

  4. The Crimean War • In 1854 the Crimean war started. Florence was asked to go to Scutari to look after the hurt British soldiers. • When she got there the hospital was overcrowded and very dirty. • There were not enough beds so the injured men had to lie on the floor. • Rats ran everywhere. • The smell was terrible.

  5. What did Florence do? • Florence worked for 20 hours a day. • She bought fresh food for the soldiers. • She cleaned the kitchens and had a chef come and cook healthy meals for the sick soldiers. • She paid workmen to clean the drains. • Soon the hospital was cleaner and fewer men were dying.

  6. The Lady with the Lamp At night Florence walked around the wards, to make sure the men were comfortable. She sat with dying soldiers. She wrote letters home for men who could not write. She carried a lantern, so the soldiers called her 'The Lady with the Lamp'.

  7. Florence’s last years • Florence came back to England in 1856. People said she was a heroine. • She worked so hard she became ill. • In 1907 Florence was awarded the ‘Order of Merit’ by the Queen. She was the first woman to ever receive this. • Florence Nightingale died on 13th August 1910. THE END
