  8. Three groups related to the group system in Dutch Primary schools: 4 – 6 years old > no writing 7 – 9 years old > start reading / writing10- 12 years old > writing 10 meetings of 1 hour / 1,5 hour for 10-12 years old Cool! English after school

  11. Theory and didactics • What are children like as learners? • They: • are quickly developing individuals • learn by watching / imitating / doing • can not understand grammatical rules and explanations about language • use non verbal clues to understand your message / language

  12. Theory and didactics • What are children like as learners? - II • They: • will talk most of the time in their mother tongue • can copy and imitate sounds and language quite accurately • are naturally curious

  14. Young learners need: • to hear clear pronunciation and intonation • to feel successful when using English • plenty of opportunities to communicate • to enjoy their efforts at speaking in English • to know they have achieved something worthwhile

  15. Teaching children under 7 • Remember they: • acquire through hearing and experiencing • learn through doing and playing: incidental learning • love playing with sounds, imitating, funny noises • can not read and write • learn grammar gradually if provided with lots of English

Teaching children between 7-12 • Remember they: • are learning to write and read in their mother tongue • are developing as thinkers • will use their first language to understand the second language (they translate more) • understand the difference between the real and the imaginary • can work with others and learn from others

  20. Starlets ( 4-6 years old): • listening and speaking activities around 10 themes • daily life vocabulary • songs and chants • lots of games • end performance • vocabulary and grammar based on Anglia’s first Step and Junior level

  21. Bright Sparks (7-9 years old): • mainly listening and speaking activities • start writing and reading words • 10 themes • songs and chant • riddles • games and crafts • end performance • vocabulary and grammar based on Anglia’s Junior and Primary level
