  9. In this group-work activity you are asked to work together in groups of four to design the shapes of fizzy soap blocks for the Christmas market. What is a bath bomb?

  10. The bath bombs must be designed to have a volume of between 80cm3 and 200cm3. Why is there such a big range of volumes?

  11. The materials cost is 1 penny per cm3.There are also labour costs of £0.30 per bomb. The company will sell the bombs for £2.95 each.

  12. Your group should show evidence of considering at least 10 different sizes and designs, each of which should be costed.

  13. You should propose a range of between 3 and 6 designs to take to market and calculate the unit profit on each design.

  14. You have 3 hours to make your decisions and create a presentation to ‘pitch’ your ideas to a panel of senior managers.

  15. radius = 3cm height = 6cm Example:

  16. Volume = πr2h V = π 32  6 V = π 9  6 V = π 54 V = 169.646 cm3 Example:

  17. With a Volume of approximately 170 cm3, this bath bomb will cost: 1  170 = 170p for materials plus 30p for the labour costs = £2.00. This gives a profit of £2.95 - £2 = £0.95 each. Example:

  18. Give some thought to keeping your poster clear and writing the script for your pitch.Other groups have found it helpful to make suitable models and create a PowerPoint presentation.
