A&S Class of 2011 • 9,684 applications (9,219 in previous year—5% increase) • 28.5% of those who applied were admitted (30% in Class of 2010) • Yield of those admitted: 36.6% (36% in Class of 2010) • Average SAT: 1389 (10-point increase vs. Class of 2010) • 83% in top 10% of graduating class • Average rank in graduating class = 5.7%

  5. Investments in Undergraduates • Need-based grants: $40.1MM • Scholarships: $15.8MM • Athletic scholarships: $4.0MM • Total from VU sources = $60MM

  7. Graduate Education in2006-2007 • In 2007, A&S programs conferred 94 Master’s degrees and 71 Ph.D.s

  8. Graduate Admissions for2006-2007 • Total applications = 3741 (10% increase) • Total admits = 579 (7% increase) • Admit rate = 15% (16% for previous year) • Total accepts = 264 • Yield = 46%

  9. Graduate Funding 2007 was the fifth year of the Summer Research Awards Program, providing 25 awards of $4000 each. In 2008, awards will increase to $4500. 2007-2008 is the fourth year of the Arts and Science Humanities Fellows Program, a merit-based competition for dissertation-year support for students in the humanities and qualitative social sciences. 2007-2008 is the first year of the Arts and Science Social Science Fellows Program, a merit-based competition for dissertation-year support for students in the social sciences.

Promotion, Tenure and Reappointment • Our record of success with the Promotion and Tenure Review Committee (PTRC) and the Provost over the past six years is impressive (69 of 70 cases approved). • This records reflects well on our departments and programs, especially in their ability to recruit and mentor outstanding junior faculty.

Faculty Achievements:A Partial List • Mark Wollaeger became co-editor of a new series on modernism at OUP • Bill Caferro is a fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies at Princeton • Arleen Tuchman and Moses Ochonu were awarded fellowships by ACLS • David Petrain received a summer fellowship from NEH • Liz Lunbeck elected to Society of American Historians • Tom Dillehay elected a fellow of American Academy of Arts and Sciences • Dieter Sevin received the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany
