  4. I. Origins of Islam A. Muhammad (570 AD – 632 AD) 1. Lived in Mecca on the Arabian Peninsula 2. At the age of 40 (610 AD) he reported the Archangel Gabrieltold him he was called on to be a prophet of God.

  5. I. Origins of Islam A. Muhammad (570 AD – 632 AD) 3. Gabriel revealed two revelations to Muhammad a. First Revelation: There is only one god Allah b. Second Revelation: Muhammad was to rise and warn people of a judgmentto come.

  6. I. Origins of Islam B. Muhammad the Preacher 1. Several years after the revelations, Muhammad began to preach in the streets to the people of Mecca. a. He preached on the ideas of equality and charity and criticized the worshipping of idols. b. He also spoke against profiting from the poor by charging high interests on loans to the poor. c. This upset the elders of the city because Mecca was a destination for many pagan religiousworshippers.

His message was liked by the poor and slaves, however the merchant rulers of Mecca thought Muhammad and his followers were threatening their authority. 3. In 622 AD, Muhammad fled Mecca for the town of Medina. a. This is known as the Hegira, Arabic for “flight.”

Followers of Islam (Muslims) are expected to pray five times each day while facing Mecca. c. All Muslims are expected to pay a yearly tax that is mostly intended to help the poor and needy. d. For the entire month of Ramadan, Muslims must not eat, smoke, or drink from sunrise to sunset. e. All able Muslims must make a pilgrimage (Hajj) to Mecca at least once in their lifetimes.
