  2. In the Rain I am going to read aloud an article filled with surprising facts about how different creatures react to rain.

  3. Seal Surfer This story is about a young boy who is befriended by a seal and how they grow together.

  4. It’s time for . . . These are . . . We use them for . . . Vocabulary Words we want to know Reading, writing, listening, & speaking!

  5. basked: rested in pleasant warmth.

  6. buffeted: struck powerfully, blown about

  7. horizon: the line where the sky seems to meet the sea or Earth.

  8. quay: a dock where ships are loaded and unloaded

  9. surf: to ride on waves, often on a surfboard

  10. swell: a long wave that moves without breaking

  11. swooped: moved with a sudden, sweeping motion

  12. Summarize • As we read, we will pause every few pages to summarize the events in the story. Summarize means to tell the important events in the story so far.

  13. Compare and Contrast • To compare and contrast details means to find out ways they are alike and different. • Comparing and contrasting characters and events helps readers understand a story better and summarize it.

  15. Word Endings –ed and -ing • The verb ending –ed usually means the action happened in the past. • The verb ending –ing usually means that the action is happening in the present. • When a base word ends with e, the e is dropped before adding –ed or –ing.
