  9. History of Beta-1,3/1,6-Glucan Beta Glucan research began in 1941 with the discovery of the immune-activating substance called Zymosan which is an immunoactive substance from yeast walls. In the 1960’s an apparent explanation on this question was given when a research group discovered that the active component of Zymosan was Beta-1,3-1,6-Glucan.

Over 30 years ago, inventors NobunaoIkawaki, NobouruFujii, & Takashi Onaka traveled to Norway to visit a fishery where the fish were not receiving any antibiotics or additives, yet remained very healthy. The inventors learned that the fish were being fed glucan. As the result of their discovery, they received a grant from the Japanese Government to research this in state owned hospitals.

  15. Clinical Studies: (SophyBeta-1,3/1,6-Glucan) Japan Date: Jan 15, 2011 The 14th Annual Assembly of Japan Society of Metabolism and Clinical Nutrition. Presented by Sasaoka et al. Patients were given Sophy beta glucan. 18 patients took 15mL 3 times per day for 3 months. Blood was drawn prior to administration of beta glucan. Natural Killer Cell activity was measured and examined each time. NK cell activity was increased in 1 month(126.4±13.76.%), 2 months (129.7±10.24%), and 3 months (116.2±8.36%) time period. Beta glucan appears to induce cell immunity and thereby may be beneficial in helping to support immune system function.

  16. Clinical Studies: (Sophy Beta-1,3/1,6-Glucan) Japan (cont.) Date : Jan 29, 2009 The 24th Assembly of Japanese Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition. Presented by Yano et al. Immunostimulatory effects of Sophy beta glucan in humans. Study on 29 healthy individuals. Group 45ml: 11 people took Sophy beta glucan 45ml a day (15ml each, 3 times a day) for a month. NK activity was measured by 51Cr- release assay. Group 5ml: 9 people took 5 ml a day Group 30 ml: 9 people took 30 ml a day In Group 45 ml, 90.9 % (10/11) of the people had an increase of NK activity. The NK activity increased from 100% (before intake) to 122.5 ±8.48% (p=0.0213) and it was statistically significant. After stopping taking, NK activity decreased to the original level in 62.5 % of the people. The data were statistically significant (p=0.0002, p=0.0402). Sophy beta glucan was proved to increase immunostimulatory effects in human. The effect depends on the duration of intake.
