Why develop a new Science & Technology Innovation Centre in Kingston? • Kingston is the hub of eastern Ontario and is centrally located between Toronto and Montreal • Kingston has an excellent local market (116,000) • Kingston has a strong regional market (267,679) • Port Hope, Peterborough, Cobourg, Trenton, Brighton, Belleville, Picton, Napanee, Gananoque, Perth, Brockville, Prescott, Cornwall For discussion purposes only

Why develop a new Science & Technology Innovation Centre in Kingston? • Kingston has a large regional school population made up of elementary, secondary, private schools and post-secondary institutions • Elementary Schools: 450 (115,000 students) • Secondary Schools: 95 ( 70,000 students) • Private Schools: 4 (approximate number of schools and full time students) For discussion purposes only

Why develop a new Science & Technology Innovation Centre in Kingston? • to promote public interest in science and technology and increase student awareness about career opportunities • to provide Eastern Ontario residents with ready access to exciting, fun and engaging, hands-on, interactive science exhibits • to create a new public and educational attraction for the Kingston region For discussion purposes only

What might be included? • multi-use planetarium for the study of space science • hands-on, science-based exhibit galleries (e.g. health, environment, forensics, robotics) • traveling exhibits gallery featuring specialized science exhibitions • a resource room featuring an adult learning centre • on-site classroom space for offering informal science education to support existing school curriculum and weekend community programs • educational outreach programs for schools including teacher training programs • gift shop featuring science and educational products For discussion purposes only

Optional Start-up Requirements? • easy road access • ample parking for passenger vehicles and buses • room for future expansion • a building which demonstrates environmental and leading edge technologies • a minimum of 50,000 square feet for completion of Phase One featuring: • a minimum of five 5,000 square ft. galleries • robotics challenge centre • planetarium • classrooms, cafeteria & gift shop • maintenance and storage space For discussion purposes only

How do we make it happen? • develop a long-term viable use of the facility that compliments the downtown core and city interest • create an investment climate that supports other small businesses operating in the vicinity • generate enough revenue to market, operate and maintain the facility and to increase the length-of-stay of visitors to the Kingston area For discussion purposes only

How do we make it happen? • ensure that the capital cost of development does not increase municipal taxes • recommend the best community-based operating model(s) that ensure the ongoing annual maintenance and operation expenses can be properly funded • provide community residents with an opportunity to express their opinion about any proposed development For discussion purposes only

What are the planning requirements? • complete a strategic plan • complete a Business and Operational Plan in conjunction with KEDCO and recommended strategies for ensuring the long-term viability of the project including: • linkages with K to Grade 12 curriculum; • linkages to post-secondary institutions; and • linkages to research companies • develop and implement a short-term and long-term capital fundraising strategy For discussion purposes only
