Decarbonized and Resilient Road Infrastructure for Sustainable Mobility in Italy

Italian TC 3.5, led by Professor Giovanni Federigo DE SANTI, focuses on decarbonizing road transport to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The initiative includes studying national strategies, promoting electric vehicle use, and enhancing green energy production along roads. With a timeline set for analyzing technologies and holding national meetings, the project aims to address challenges such as biofuels, EV charging systems, and research innovation in sustainable transportation.

Italy will be required to report during 2025 to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change(UNFCCC) about the national strategic plan to achieve in the transport sector the net-zero emission goal by 2050, in compliance with the 2021 Climate Law signed by all EU member countries Inventory Emissions cf. 1990 (%)

  4. Summary Activities and Goals Three Working Groups are identified in the Italian TC 3.5 with the following goals: 1. Study of national strategies and policies for decarbonizing transportation (WG1) Topics. Different technologies that are currently candidates will be considered (full electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, hydrogen vehicles, gas-methane, synthetic fuels, bio-fuels, etc.) Goals. Defining a medium (10-15 years) to long-term ( 2050 and beyond) national strategy for the decarbonization of road transport for both light (passengers and LDV) and heavy (HDV) vehicles 2. System study to introduce electrification of the transportation sector (ERS)(WG2) Topics. Static and dynamic electric charging Goals. Defining a medium to long-term national strategy for the development of electric vehicle use 3. Study of a strategy for increasing green energy production along roads (WG3) Topics. Solutions for generation from alternative energy sources in the road sector Goals. Defining a medium to long-term national strategy on the sustainability and feasibility of green energy production 4 April 24, 2024 DECARBONIZED AND RESILIENT ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE TO ENHANCE SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY

  6. Main Challenges in Italy Acknowledgment: During the G7 Italian Presidency, the Italian Minister of Environment and Energy Security ( MASE) is promoting “The Sustainable Biofuels International Forum” , Turin April 28 2024. The initiative will involve G7 membership, the G20 Brazilian Presidency, CEM, IEA, FAO GBEP, the Global Biofuel Alliance and other key multilateral stakeholders. The forum will produce the “ Turin Joint Statement on Sustainable Biofuels “ Open issues: What is the right balance for the next 10-15 years and beyond 2050 among the various technologies for road transport : FCEVs, PHEVs , hydrogen, low-carbon and sustainable carbon-neutral fuels including biofuels and synthetic fuels ? What contribution to RES can come from roads? How can we use and storage it? Feasibility, efficiency, sustainability , safety and security, etc. of static and dynamic recharging systems for EVs Multi-dimensional impact assessment of various scenarios What are the main challenges for research and innovation? 6 April 24, 2024 DECARBONIZED AND RESILIENT ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE TO ENHANCE SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY
