  1. 10/6/10Aim: What is a Field? Do Now: R&H p.26, A&E #31-34 HW – Finish lab

  2. Field – any region of the environment where a measurement can be taken at every location Field Value – whatever aspect of the field that you choose to measure. Ex. Temp, pressure, density, rainfall, snowfall, elevation, etc. Isolines – lines that connect points of equal field value. Field Map- A map made of isolines that show a pattern of data and allow us to predict any location on the map. Interval- the value of increase/decrease for each isoline.

  3. Gradient- how fast change is occurring, very similar to Rate of Change. Gradient = change in field value change in distance • The closer spaced your isolines are the greater the gradient between the two locations. • Field maps generally have energy that flows from a source (highest value) to a sink (lowest value).

  4. Types of Isolines and Field Maps • Isotherm- connects points of equal temperature. • Isobar- connects points of equal air pressure. • Isoyet- connects points of equal rainfall. • Contour line- connects points of equal elevation.

  5. A Contour Field Map

  6. A Temperature or Isotherm Map

  7. 10/7/10Aim: How do we make a field map? • Do Now – Take a handout and draw the isothermal map. • HW- Finish lab.
