  4. Introduction to CITI • “CITI is a public/private partnership to promote IT education, through strategic investments, that prepares graduates to participate, lead and innovate in the knowledge-based economy of Massachusetts.”

  6. Commonwealth Information Technology Initiative (CITI) Introduction to CITI • Aimed at strengthening, modernizing, and expanding the Computer Science and IT programs in public higher education.

  7. Commonwealth Information Technology Initiative (CITI) Introduction to CITI • 2004 • Expansion to K-12 • Funding under the Economic Stimulus Package’s Pipeline Fund (administered by the Board of Higher Education)

  9. IT Fluency – CITI Goals “Preparing today’s students for tomorrow’s technology-infused world.”

  10. IT Fluency – What is IT Fluency? The National Research Council’s three types of IT knowledge: Skills - proficiency with contemporary computer applications Concepts – e.g., how a computer works, information authenticity Capabilities - higher-level thinking processes, e.g., problem-solving, reasoning, complexity management

  11. What is IT Fluency? • “By 2010, we envision students graduating from secondary and post-secondary public institutions who are fluent in IT and able to use these skills in any industry context.”

  12. Information Technology Across the Curriculum What is ITAC? • The integration of IT fluency education across existing subjects and curricula. • This approach has been shown to be more effective for non-traditional STEM learners.

  13. K-12 IT Pipeline Fund Grants Competition CITI and the Pipeline Fund • Working with regional partnerships to produce the best possible programs. • Build partnerships within the regions. • Encourage coordination within regions. • Require regional leaders be notified.

  15. A – Team Professional Development Grants. The Grants • Partnerships • Professional development for in-service teachers • IT skills, IT understanding, integration IT throughout existing curriculum • Up to $30,000 each

  16. B – Continuing Professional Development Grants The Grants • Partnerships • Previous CITI grantees • To train a new group of teachers (up to $20,000) or extend activities with existing teachers ($5,000)

  17. C – Pre-Service ITAC Integration The Grants • Adapting existing pre-service teacher courses to reflect goals of ITAC and IT fluency • Encouraged to offer these courses online • $3,000 to $8,000 each
