This project explores the hypothesis that brain mass differences exist between mammals (Mammalia) and birds (Aves). Utilizing Excel, we will organize our data where each row represents a different observation. By identifying the response variable (brain/body mass ratio) and explanatory variable (species classification), we will analyze and visualize the data to answer two key questions: Do brain sizes differ between mammals and birds? Is the mean brain to body mass ratio significantly different between these two groups?

Basic Data Organisation • Use Excel to input and organise your data • Each row is a different observation
Propose an hypothesis • That the mass of brains of mammals (Mammalia) are different to the brains of birds (Aves) • Identify the Response Variable • Identify the Explanatory Variable(s)
Calculate new response variable Explanatory Variable Response Variable
How will we plot these data? Brain / body mass ratio Aves Mammalia
Questions • Biological question • Does brain size differ between birds and mammals? • Data question • Is the mean ratio of brain to body mass different between the birds and mammals?
