Need forJust Leaders Lesson 5
Introduction • A Model for Leadership • Lesson Context
The Modesto Manifesto • In the late 1940s, Billy Graham’s ministry was becoming well known. • Graham realized that he needed to hold himself and his ministry to an extremely high standard of conduct for the sake of the gospel message he proclaimed. • In 1948, Graham and his staff created what they called the “Modesto Manifesto.”
The Modesto Manifesto • They pledged themselves to follow the highest standards of conduct in every area of their lives. • When the evangelist died in 2018, tributes to Graham poured in. Many of them cited his uncompromising integrity. • Even those who did not accept Graham’s message had to acknowledge that he was a man who practiced what he preached.
The Modesto Manifesto • In the days of the prophet Malachi, the leaders of God’s people took the polar opposite approach. • What we might call “Malachi’s Manifesto” exposed the corruption of these leaders and called attention to what God has always desired.
Failing the CallMalachi 2:1-9 • Hear the Lord (vv. 1-4) • Fear the Lord (vv. 5-7) • Follow the Lord (vv. 8, 9)
Priests on Trial • Today’s text from Malachi could be perceived as a trial with three parts: (1) A Statement of the Priests’ Duties; (2) The Accusation of How the Priests Failed; (3) God’s Judgment on the Priests. • Read the following sections of the text, and help describe how the trial might proceed.
Priests on Trial • 1. A Statement of the Priests’ Duties. • Read Malachi 2:4-7. • What relationship were the priests to have with God? • A covenant relationship in which they feared the Lord and honored His name.
Priests on Trial 1. A Statement of the Priests’ Duties. • Read Malachi 2:4-7. • What responsibilities did the priests have to the people? • To set a good example by speaking truth and avoiding sin. • To turn people away from sin. • To be the Lord’s messengers and teach people His laws.
Priests on Trial 2. The Accusations Against the Priests • Read Malachi 2:1, 2a, 8. • How had the priests failed? • They were not listening to God. • What God said was not important to them. • They did not give glory to His name. • Because of their own sins, they caused others to stumble.
Priests on Trial 2. The Accusations Against the Priests • Read Malachi 3:5. • In what ways did the people sin because priests had not taught them properly? • Sorcery. • Adultery. • Lying. • Abusing workers and the weak and helpless.
Priests on Trial 3. God’s Judgment on the Priests • Read Malachi 2:2b, 3, 9; 3:5, 6. • How would God punish the priests? • Curse their blessings. • Rebuke and humiliate their offspring. • Make them contemptible and despised. • Bring them to judgment.
Priests on Trial 3. God’s Judgment on the Priests • Read Malachi 3:6. • What limit did God place on His punishment of the people? • They were not destroyed. • Why did He not destroy them? • Because He is the Lord, who does not change. He kept His promise to Jacob.
What Do You Think? • What are some ways to discern a pending problem of cursed blessings today? • Digging Deeper – When difficult times do come, how will you determine if the problem is one of cursed blessings rather than random occurrence?
What Do You Think? • How can churches do a better job in the area of holding their leaders accountable? • Digging Deeper – Which of these texts best support your response: Matthew 18:15-17; Romans 16:17, 18; 1 Corinthians 5:11-13;2 Thessalonians 3:14, 15; 1 Timothy 6:3-5; Titus 1:10-16; 3:10? Why?
What Do You Think? • In what ways is the admonishment to the priests applicable to Christians today, given the reality of our own priesthood (1 Peter 2:9)? • Digging Deeper – If no one seeks God’s Word from you as a messenger of the Lord, what problem and solution do you see?
What Do You Think? • What are some good ways your church can acknowledge its leaders who are doing the opposite ofMalachi 2:8? • Digging Deeper – What will be your part in this initiative?
Renewing the CallMalachi 3:5, 6 • Trying Offenders (v. 5) • Unchanging God (v. 6)
What Do You Think? • In what ways can you use Malachi 3:5 as a source of comfort or encouragement in the face of today’s negative headlines? • Digging Deeper – In what ways can you be an empathizer in passing that encouragement along to the oppressed as named in this text?
Lesson Outline Conclusion • “Familiarity Breeds Contempt” • Prayer • Thought to Remember
My Priesthood • In 1 Peter 2:9 we learn that Christians are part of “a royal priesthood.” • Read through the following characteristics of a good priest. • How would you rate yourself in each area?
My Priesthood • Passion for Christ • Resolved to live a holy life • Intolerant of what God does not tolerate • Enters a quiet time with God daily • Studies the Bible regularly • Tolerates what God tolerates • What’s your plan to improve?
