  2. Elementary Nonfiction Reading Key Points in Reading • Nonfiction comprises at least half of what students read • Content area lessons should reflect integrated English SOL within planning and instruction OR English lessons should integrate other content area information

  3. Elementary Nonfiction Reading Key Points in Reading • Comprehension skills and strategies are woven throughout • As students become independent readers, they need to be instructed in reading texts that are considerably longer and more complex in plot, syntax, and structure.

  4. Memory • Pretend that today is the first day of class for you. You had previous instructions to bring something for show and tell so that your classmates could get to know you. • On a piece of paper tell: • What item did you bring? • Why is the item significant to you? • Be very descriptive

Use as a get to know you activity • Mock Quiz after first reading – teach importance of listening to picture books • Emphasize Characters • Implied/Explicit Traits • Theme • Multiple meanings of the word memory • Symbolism • Foldable • Is this Fiction or Nonfiction? • Could this be made into a nonfiction piece?

  7. Link to Nonfiction • Link to current event about memory loss or research memory loss • Everyone can find something of interest to research • Athletes could report on concussions • Could do a mini-biography on someone who has suffered memory loss

  12. Signal Words Time sequence first, second, next, later, after, and finally Compare-contrast like, unlike, different, and same Cause-effect because, if….then, when…..then

  13. Create Travel Brochure • Students research a place they would like to visit and create a travel brochure • Look at examples online or from local travel agency

  14. Persuasive Essay • Have students pick an issue in their world that needs to be changed. Write a persuasive essay or letter convincing others to join your cause. Students can present their essays or letters to the class.
