  2. Question 1)a)How would you describe the mood of the family in stanzas 1 and 2? • 2 MARKS • Tense, Unfocused, Grim, Uncommunicative… • Not the atmosphere of the writing/poem but how the people felt. • Did not need to give evidence and explain in a).

  3. Question 1)b)Pick two words or phrases which help to create this mood and explain why you think they are effective. • 4 MARKS • Needed to make sure that you had two separate words/phrases. • Not words you made up; from the poem, • ‘Why’ you think they were effective needed to be addressed; not just saying ‘this was effective’, what did it show?

  4. Question 2)a) and 2)b)Read stanzas 4 and 5. For the speaker, how are France and England a) different from each other b) similar to each other? • 4 MARKS • Do not do too much work! • Only needed to say what the things were, eg. • Different – temperature, language, Metro, baguettes etc. • Similar – coffee, man cursing car, Father still meticulous, poor experience of food (grit/flies).

  5. Question 3What impressions does this poem create of the speaker’s father? Refer closely to the poem in your answer. • 5 MARKS • Not just what he did, but what characteristics/qualities does he show? • Eg. meticulous as lays everything out early, militarylike as orders around, insensitive or careless over other people as he does not notice they are all in discomfort, keen to impress as tells boys of ‘highest big town …’ • ‘Refer closely’, meaning give examples from the poem of the behaviour, needed to be shown.

  6. Question 4The poem describes a journey. How well does the last stanza conclude the poem? • 5 MARKS • Key words to address in your answer were ‘conclude’ (finish/round off/finalise) and ‘How’. • Needed to show how the poem is finished and brought to a close, not just what is in the final stanza. • Eg. ‘last leg’, ‘finally’ showing pleased it was over, sense of anticipation eg. ‘clouds like a lake in the valley’, change of tone as seemed more beautiful/attractive, ‘a new accent’ as a different place/their destination.

  7. Question 5)Do you think the speaker of the poem will choose to have a family holiday like this with his own children? Use ideas from the poem to support your answer. • 5 MARKS • ‘No’ much easier to argue! • ‘Ideas to support your answer’ needed to be clearly shown. • Showing the ordeal that he thought the journey was, choose the strongest lines to illustrate eg. ‘on the ferry you could want to die’, ‘too hot’. • Could show the journey was worth it, if you picked up on the magical description of the final destination eg. ‘the clouds like a lake in the valley’.

  8. Paper I – Section B • Time management! • The final two questions were worth 10 marks, 40% of the marks available in this section of the paper. • Do not do too much or explain in the wrong place. • Ensure that you ‘refer closely’ when asked for.
