  2. Welcome • If you remembered your FOIP sheet, please hand it in the bin and grab a treat! • Grab a copy of today’s handout on the desk • Fill in the KNOW section of your KWL chart about air

  4. Mystery Box • Work in partners to fill in your observations and answer the questions on the “mystery bag” work sheet • Add to your KWL chart

  5. “Balancing Act”

  6. Question Does an inflated balloon weigh more than a deflated one?

  7. Materials • 2 balloons (same size) • 1 bamboo stick • Ruler • Tape • String

  8. Procedure (6) • Use the ruler to find the center of stick • Tie one end of string to center of stick • Tape one balloon on each end of the stick • Remove one of the balloons, inflate and tie it • Attach inflated balloon back to the end of the stick • Observe and record results

  9. Hypothesis If _____________ happens then I think that _____________ will happen. Example: If one balloon is deflated then I think that the inflated balloon will _______ (rise or fall)

  10. Hypothesis Divide… • Inflated balloon will rise • Scale will stay balanced • Inflated balloon will lower

  11. Variables • Controlled variables: size and position of balloons • Manipulated variable: Air in balloon • Responding variable : The way the stick tilts

  13. Results • The deflated balloon rose and the inflated balloon lowered.

  14. Inferences • The an inflated balloon weighs more than a deflated balloon • Therefore, air must have mass
