  4. Socratic Questioning teaches us the value of cultivating deep learningand develop active, independentlearners. Clarification ‘Why do you say that?’, ‘Could you explain further?’ Challenge assumptions ‘Is this always the case?’ Ask for evidence ‘Why do you say that?’, ‘Can you give me an example?’ Alternativeviewpoints‘Can/did anyone see this another way?’ Implications and consequences‘But if...happened, what would result?’, ‘How does...affect...?’ Question the question‘Why do you think that I asked that question?’, ‘Why was that question important?’ Professional Development

  5. Two kinds of questions Display questions. These are elicit learners’ prior knowledge and check comprehension. They focus on form or meaning, and the teacher already knows the answer. • What does ..... mean? • When do we use .....? • What comes after .....? • What’s the opposite of .....? • Where’s the stress in .....? Referential questions. These require information, opinion, explainationor clarification. They focus content rather than language, require ‘follow-up’ or ‘probe’ questions, and the answer is not always known by the teacher. • What do you think about .....? • Have you ever....when/where .....? • If you had .....wha t.....? • What kind of .....? • How do you .....? Every question demands a response = communication Brainstorming a topic Elicitingstudents’ prior knowledge Checking meaning and understanding Question-response for practice Strategy questions Classroom management questions Feedback questions Professional Development

  11. Good CCQs Make sure the questions are simple yes/no, either/or and simple WH qs. Don’t use the new ( target) grammar in your questions. Don’t use vocabulary that your Ss don’t already know. Bring out the concepts such as time & tense in your Qs. Use as many questions as possible to check various aspetcs the language & to cover as many learners as possible. Professional Development
