Learning Objectives • Provide a better understanding of what LNT really is, and how it relates to Scouting • Explore/emphasize importance of using LNT principles during the upcoming outdoor experience • Explore ways that Wood Badge participants can incorporate LNT message in home units, districts, and councils

  3. LNT – What Is It? • Leave No Trace, Inc (www.lnt.org), is a nonprofit educational corporation authorized by the NPS, USFS, BLM, and the USFWS, that works with these agencies, educational programs and youth organizations, and a growing segment of the outdoor industry. • NOLS works with LNT, Inc, to develop educational programs to promote responsible use of wildlands. • The 7 principles are guidelines – not rules.

  6. Applying the Principles • During the preopening, you shared information on individual gear and clothing. Next, you will discuss group gear, menus, and cooking methods. • Discuss briefly how choices of equipment, clothing, and menus are affected by LNT principles.

  10. Taking It Home Discuss some ways that you could ensure that Leave No Trace principles are used in your home unit, district, or council.

Taking It Home - Suggestions • Challenge Scouts and Scouters to earn the Leave No Trace Awareness Award. • Invite representatives of land management agencies to share LNT principles at meetings. • Remind folks that LNT principles appear prominently in the Boy Scout Handbook. • Offer no other alternative (proscriptive!).

  12. Mission Statement The mission of the Leave No Trace program is to develop a nationally recognized minimum-impact backcountry educational system that educates wildland user groups, federeal agencies, and the public through training and effective written materials. EVALUATE IT!
