What is it? • Behavioral interviewing is a technique used by employers in which the questions asked assist the employer in making predictions about a potential employee's future success based on actual past behaviors, instead of based on responses to hypothetical questions. • http://www.career.vt.edu/JOBSEARC/interview/Behavioral.htm

  3. Traditional Interviewing • How would you respond to X-Y-Z situation? • Give the interviewer what they want • The person being interviewed has minimal accountability!

  4. Behavioral Interviewing • The interviewer will pick your response apart to find a specific behavior. • “What were you thinking at that point?” • “Lead me through your decision process”

  5. Some Questions • FOCUS AND DEDICATION TO THE INDUSTRY: 1.) Why did you choose your major and career? 2.) At what point did you make this decision? 3.) Specifically, what attracts you to this industry as a career?

  6. TECHNICAL AND PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE: 1.) Sometimes it is easy to get in “over your head”. Describe an instance where you had to ask for assistance on a project or assignment. 2.) Give an example of how you applied knowledge from a previous course to another class. (Not a good point to use an example about thermo)

  7. Teamwork: -Describe a situation where others you were working with on a project disagreed with your ideas. What did you do? Adaptability: -Tell of a situation in which you have had to adjust quickly to changes over which you had no control. What impact did the change have on you?

  8. Communication: -Tell of a time when your active listening skills really paid off for you-maybe a time when other people missed the key idea being expressed. Sensitivity Planning and Organizing Ability to Learn Initiative

  10. Evaluation System: 5.) Much more than acceptable; Significantly above criteria required for successful job performance 4.) More than acceptable; Generally exceeds criteria relative to quality and quantity of behavior required. 3.) Acceptable; Meets criteria relative to quality and quantity of behavior required. 2.) Less than acceptable; does not meet criteria relative to quality and quantity of behavior required. 1.) Much Less than acceptable; Significantly below criteria required for successful job performance.
