  2. For the purposes of our class… • You belong to one of four philosophical stances: • A. Idealist • B. Humanist • C. Existentialist • D. Realist

  3. 1. Health Care as a SystemThe Idealist • …believes it is up to the individual person to be primarily responsible for their own health care with the support of their families…be educated and informed

  4. Health Care as a SystemHumanist • We should have a system of universal health care as they do in Canada and Sweden

  5. Health Care as a SystemThe Existentialist • Health care is a system that exists for the rich and extends minimum benefits to the general populous

  6. Health Care as a System The Realist • Each person need to take from the health marketplace whatever is available for personal health care…free clinics; health department immunizations; discounts and company benefits.

  7. 2. Disease should be examined with the understanding:(The Idealist) • The being has the innate ability to cure himself through traditional medical practices

  8. Disease ExaminationThe Humanist • The being can be cured by holistic and traditional practices

  9. Disease ExaminationThe Existentialist • The being is a unique individual who must educate himself in order to achieve disease prevention

  10. Disease ExaminedThe Realist • The Being can be disease free by ultimately using the tenants of rational science.

  11. 3. Social LifeThe Idealist • The sympathetic concern for other is central in this life

  12. Social LifeThe Humanist • Actively participate in social life (causes) to understand the best which man has achieved (Green Peace, PETA, Earth First, etc.)

  13. Social LifeExistentialist • Individual man is the only foundation of his own existence and essence (Astrology, Eastern Practices and New Age Movement)

  14. Social LifeThe Realist • People are something to be enjoyed with relish and abandonment

  15. 4. StressThe Idealist • Aggressively focusing on our personal ideals and absolute powers will aid in stress management

  16. StressThe Humanist • A lack of balance physically and socially leads to personal trauma

  17. StressThe Existentialist • Man understands his own being and purpose of life in the shadow of death

  18. StressThe Realist • Man is overly entangled in his dependence on things and people. • Must have the best things in life to be successful • He who dies with the most toys, WINS! • Nothing wrong with being rich as long as being rich does not overly control you

  19. 5. Physical FitnessThe Idealist • Is beneficial, but the body’s primary excellence is to house a being of spirit

  20. Physical FitnessThe Humanist • Is highly esteemed but not in a hectic or irrational way

  21. Physical FitnessThe Existentialist • Is something to be experienced but only for a temporal moment

  22. Physical FitnessThe Realist • Is a festival of personal control, to use the body for personal or social reasons

  23. 6. Men and WomenThe Idealist • Are highly complex beings, different emotionally, physically and systematically

  24. Men and WomenThe Humanist • Are evolving creatures with the ability of equal excellence

  25. Men and WomenThe Existentialist • Are searching beings caught in a nonsensical world of conflict and unknowing

  26. Men and WomenThe Realist • Are self-centered beings able to best co-exist when commitments are minimal

  27. 7. Pre-marital SexThe Idealist • Should be avoided as it leads to separation from a more perfect future relationship

  28. Pre-marital SexThe Humanist • Is the natural culmination of a friendly, predictable and mutually agreeable relationship

  29. Pre-marital SexThe Existentialist • Is an experience that reflects the temporal existence in time and requires no relationship

  30. Pre-marital SexThe Realist • Is be enjoyed but need deep examination before it can develop into a meaningful relationship

  31. 8. ChildrenThe Idealist • Are a blessing of a marital process and necessary for social stability

  32. ChildrenThe Humanist • Are the result of restraint and intelligent forethought and planning

  33. ChildrenThe Existentialist • Are the continuation of man’s uncertainty in a world of social abyss

  34. ChildrenThe Realist • Are the completion of a relationship but should not deter parental individual interests

  35. 9. The Use of Prescribed DrugsThe Idealist • Is acceptable under a doctor’s care

  36. Prescribed DrugsThe Humanist • Is acceptable if controlled by self moderation and examination

  37. Prescribed DrugsThe Existentialist • Is another indication that personal use is both anxious and fearful

  38. Prescribed DrugsThe Realist • Is acceptable as long as it helps in personal lifestyle and interest

  42. HIVThe Realist • Is a predicament to be managed by lifestyle choices and scientific evidence

  43. Vegans The Idealist • A fringe nutritional lifestyle reflecting a larger moral code of self interest

  44. VegansThe Humanist • Social animals who are considerate of the equality of all living things

  45. VegansThe Existentialist • Striving beings who live in the daily absurdity of choice and decision making

  46. VegansThe Realist • Individuals who are reflective and aware of their being in a world of disciplines

  47. ObesityThe Idealist • Hinders the ability to develop personal growth significance by lack of natural restraint

  48. ObesityThe Humanist • Prevents an active lifestyle through irrational behavior and indulgence

  49. ObesityThe Existentialist • Is further proof of the angst of human frailty and rationality

  50. ObesityThe Realist • Is understandable if one is aware of what is happening and prepared to deal with it
