Reading/Language • Top Seven Reading Strategies (predicting, summarizing, visualizing, questioning, inferencing, clarifying, making connections) • Vocabulary Study • Comprehension • Chapter Books • Basal Stories • Cursive Writing • Sentence Types/Expansion • Paragraph Formation/Writing • Daily Journal Writing • 1 Spelling unit per week • Basic Phonics Skills

  5. Daily Routines • Class Starters-Daily Math, Mt. Language • “What’s My Place?, What’s My Value?” • Reading/Math Intervention • Write in Agenda Pad • Check Homework

  6. Snacks/Water Bottles • Healthy snacks ONLY • Eat while we work • Reminder: Only water allowed in the classroom for snack. • Encourage your child not to play with his or her water bottle

  7. Schedule/Specials Daily Schedule is in parent handbook. We go to PE every other day. Information Concerning PE: • The PE Newsletter was given to students. • Athletic shoes are REQUIRED for PE. • Parent's note for student missing PE is only good for 1 day. If a student needs to remain out of PE longer than one day a Doctor's Excuse is needed. 

  8. Weekly Newsletter The Weekly Agenda contains the following: • Parent’s notes/Reminders • A brief overview of the week by subject area • Tests/Projects

Homework • Every night, Monday-Friday…Read for 20 minutes, parents signs the reading log nightly. • Occasionally, Math homework • Clean out keep at home pocket…DO NOT TAKE ANYTHING ELSE OUT OF THE BINDER!! • Important notes from school • Child’s responsibility to check it daily • Written in Agenda Pad daily

  10. Agenda Pad • Sign nightly! • All homework assignments are written here daily • Tests/Projects/Important Events are written on the day they occur

  11. Behavior • Classroom Rules posted in the room • Should be followed daily • Positive Rewards: Candy Jar, Pop Your Top • Negative Consequences: Sign Book, Sit Out at Recess, Silent Lunch, Note Home, Principal’s Office

  12. Conduct Sheet • Children sign the conduct sheet for not following the rules after one verbal warning. • Please check the conduct sheet daily and sign where highlighted. • Number of conduct checks determines the conduct grade for the nine weeks 0 checks = Outstanding 1-4 checks = Good 5-8 checks = Satisfactory 9-12 checks = Needs Improvement 13 + checks = Unsatisfactory

  13. Grades • Grades are given for each subject area: Math, Reading, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies • Tests, Class work, Activities (both group and individual), Homework, and Projects all have the potential for being graded and averaged each nine weeks

  14. Grades Continued… Grading Scale: 90-100 - A 80-89 – B 70-79 - C 60-69 – D below 60 - F

  15. STI Grades Grades can be accessed at home! Husky411.com/informationnow You will need your child’s student number (lunch number) and your child’s pin number.

  16. Husky Folder • Contains graded papers from the previous week • Sent home every Wednesday • Sign and return graded papers on Thursday • Send back all papers, they will be sent home at the end of each nine weeks

  17. Reading Log • Done nightly • Record title of book & pages read • Students write one response each week at the bottom of the log • Sign nightly

AR Checklist • New checklists are given out each nine weeks. • AR counts for 30% of your child’s reading grade each nine weeks. • All books should be read by the deadline on the checklist. • Books should be within the current AR range. • Books listed on the checklist should have a score of 80% or higher. • Two grades are given: 1 for the checklist, 1 average of all tests taken (even those not passed) • Test are taken during Intervention each morning and when work is completed early • All library books that are checked out from the school library should be AR books for the checklist until it is complete. • Check to see if a book is AR by logging on to www.renlearn.com.

  19. Scholastic Book Orders • Done monthly • Encourage your child to order AR books • CHECKS ONLY made payable to Scholastic • Helps to purchase free books for our library

  20. Field Trips We will be going on the following field trips this year: • Vulcan Materials • McWane Center • Sloss Furnaces/Ruffner Mountain Chaperone Policy: • Sign up, or indicate you would like to chaperone on the field trip form • Limited number will attend • Names will be placed in a bucket and drawn in front of the kids
