  1. Challenger Mission June 8, 2010 Paramus, New Jersey

  2. On June 8, 2010, the Challenger Committee from the Central Intermediate Unit # 10 visited the Buehler Challenger & Science Center in Paramus, NJ. The purpose of the trip was for the team to experience an actual mission and to collaborate with leaders and staff members with the intentions of developing an understanding of a Challenger Learning Center. The team’s goal is to help support the educational programming of a Challenger Learning Center through the YMCA of Centre County. In conjunction with the mission of the YMCA of Centre County, the planning team is dedicated to constructing and developing a Challenger Learning Center. The goal of the committee is to help plan positive educational experiences in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Educators from each of the 12 school districts in Central Intermediate Unit # 10, a number of educators from Penn State University, and a team from the YMCA of Centre County have volunteered to help provide their professional expertise in promoting the excitement of space exploration and positive learning experiences with a strong Pennsylvania standards based emphasis.

  4. Flight Director Provides Directions to the Members of Mission Control. Each member served a role in Mission Control. Precision needed to be followed to execute successful communication between Mission Control and the crew members of the Space Station.

  6. CIU # 10 Challenger Team Makes Decisions Each team member was assigned a role to play either in the simulated Space Mission or in the Mission Control room.

  7. Orientation CIU # 10 CLC Committee listens to the development of a Challenger Center for Space Science Education, a not-for-profit organization created in 1986 by the families of the astronauts from Challenger Space Shuttle mission STS-51-L

  8. Flight Directors Explain Buehler Challenger & Science Center has established partnerships, relationships, and collaborations with many prestigious science and education organizations.

Flight Director Clarifies Thousands of students and teachers take part in Challenger Center programs every year through community outreach, school-based programs, and our Challenger Learning Center simulators. We provide countless resources, educational materials, and training to the educational community.

  10. NASA Supports CLCs Challenger Center is a not-for-profit organization that is not part of NASA. However, the space agency has continued to be an enthusiastic supporter of Challenger Center’s efforts.

  23. Oxygen Failure Mission Control heeds the warning of oxygen failure. Collaboration of the mission control crew provides for a successful solution.

  24. Prepares for Emergency David Geanette, Assistant High School Principal from the State College Area School District, positions on the space station floor until the emergency is resolved.

  25. Flight Director Accounts for Monitors Mission control crew members focus not only on the monitors in front of their station, but on the monitors overlooking the crew.

  26. Alert! Alert! Humidity problem exists in the Space Station. Crew members need to act quickly.
