Dog Diabetes • Diabetes, a common condition for humans, is also relatively common in domestic animals like dogs. • Type I diabetes is the more severe form of the disease, as it is dependent on daily insulin injections for maintaining blood sugar balance. • This stems from over indulging your dog with fatty treats such as milk bones.

  3. Symptoms of dog Diabetes • Early signs • •Excessive urination • •Excessive thirst • •Hunger • •Weight loss even with normal appetite • Later signs • •Anorexia – complete loss of appetite • •Lethargy and depression • •Vomiting • •Depression • •Vomiting • Other symptoms include: • •Enlarged liver • •Cataracts • •Bladder or kidney infection • •Obesity

Causes for diabetes in Dogs • Dogs that are given steroid shots on a regular basis may eventually develop diabetes. • Steroids can also affect the normal functions of the pancreas, causing production of insulin to be slowed down tremendously. • Dogs are more prone to get diabetes if there parents had it therefore it is passed very often through heredity. • It is essential that dogs used for breeding undergo a full check up so that a breeder can be assured that the dog is not suffering from unrecognizable health conditions that may affect its puppies.

  5. Diabetes in dogs today • It is suffered by one out of every ten dogs in the world. • Its prevalence is slowly increasing over time, which is also true of diabetes in humans.
