  9. cyclops • Odysseus shares with us the proof of the Cyclops family: • “The cruel monster made no answer, but just jumped up and reached out towards my men, grabbed two like a pair of puppies and dashed them on the ground: their brains ran out and soaked into the earth. Then he cut them up limb by limb, and made them ready for supper. He devoured them like a mountain lion, bowels and flesh and marrow-bones, and left nothing” (Homer 105-106). • Odysseus explains the cruelty and harshness of the monster’s actions. His experience, although he was luckily not one of the men eaten by the monster, proves the existence and reality of the Cyclops monster.

  12. Lotus-eater • Odysseus also shares with us the proof of the Lotus-Eaters: • “Nine days after that I was beaten about on the sea by foul winds, and on the tenth day we made land in the country of lotus-eaters, who get their food from flowers. We went ashore and took in water, and the men made their meal on the spot close to the ships[...] Before long they came across some of the lotus-eaters. However, they did no harm to the men, only gave them some of their lotus to eat. As soon as they tasted the honey-sweet fruit, they thought no more of coming back to us with news, but rather chose to stay there with the lotus-eating natives, and chew their lotus, and good-bye to home” (Homer 101-102). • The lotus-eaters’ abilities to lure Odysseus’ people in and give them a lotus flower to try, attempting to convince his people to stay in the land of the lotus-eaters, proves the deception and existence of the lotus-eaters.
