Lesson Outline • What is thermoregulation? • Negative Feedback Mechanisms • Thermoregulation Daphnia Laboratory Preparation
What is thermoregulation? The regulation of internal temperatures by negative feedback systems. What adaptations (negative feedback systems)do animals utilize to maintain homeostasis?
Useful Terminology Endotherm: an animal that maintains its body temperature by internal mechanisms. use approx 80% of energy from food to maintain body temperature Ectotherm: an animal that maintains body temperature by absorbing thermal energy
Getting Started • Each group will record a stimulus’s (environment change) affect on daphnia heart rates. • Each group must have 5 different conditions of the same stimulus • You are expected to design your own experiment Ensure you have included variables and control groups.
Recording Heart Rates Requires the use of a microscope. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2g-04Uk0ut0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhOUwlOdxkA
Daphnia Heart Rates Factors Lab Materials: • Sucrose, caffeine, acetylsalicylic acid, ethanol • Daphnia (D. Magna) Clean up: • all waste in waste bottle • clean all glassware after use • clean all droppers Safety: • standard precautions • ethanol
Your lab write-up (formal) • an introduction (any background info you will use later in your report … assume the reader knows Gr 10 Science • a hypothesis (p 710) • the variables (p 707) • the procedure you used* (p 711 … use 2nd person voice) • your clear, concise and complete results (p 708 or 711) • analysis of your results (p 708 … connect your results to the hypothesis and investigation question) • evaluation of your procedure (p 711) • conclusion
Groups Should have Daphnia Test Results completed by Thursday Lab is due Dec 20th
