  2. Darius He ruled Persia at its peak

  3. Childhood Darius was the eldest of five sons. Before he became king he served as a spearman in an Egyptian campaign.

  4. Family • Darius’s father was Hystaspes and grandfather to Arsames. • Darius was distantly related to Achaemenes who was royalty. • This justifies his ability to be king.

  5. Rise to the Throne The ruler of Persia Cambyses was assassinated during a riot . Darius was chosen as the new king.

  6. Darics • Darics were a new unit of cash he brought to the world that was excepted internationally. • Darics were made of gold and silver. • The gold ones could only be mint by the king. • The silver could only be mint by other important people such as generals.

  7. Europe • He was best known for his expedition in Europe. • After conquering areas around Greece, people in Athens were beginning to like Persia. Darius accepted them in . • Eventually the people in Athens and Sparta became anti-Persian

  8. Europe continued • Athens exiled all pro-Persians. • Darius of course did not like this. • He sent an army commanded by his son in law to Athens and Sparta • This was known as the battle of marathon.

  9. Death • After the defeat at marathon Darius began to plan another invasion. • This one, he would command it himself. • Unfortunately he died before he could.
